EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – COMMUNITY SERVICES MAINTENANCE (TEMPORARY POSITION)

The Town of Sussex is seeking a dependable and motivated individual for a temporary Community Services Maintenance Level I position.

Under the general direction of the Director of Community Services or designate, the successful applicant will assist with the daily operation and maintenance of the 8th Hussars Sports Centre, municipal parks, grounds, recreational facilities, and related equipment. This position involves repetitive and physically demanding work, including the use of hand tools and the operation of specialized equipment and departmental vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

• Inspect and perform general maintenance of municipal recreational facilities, parks, and grounds

• Assist with the daily operation of the 8th Hussars Sports Centre

• Prepare and maintain arena ice, including operating an ice resurfacer

• Operate departmental vehicles, tools, and specialized equipment

• Perform general labour and manual tasks requiring physical strength and agility

• Complete basic carpentry, painting, cleaning, and facility-maintenance tasks

• Communicate effectively with coworkers and members of the public

• Work independently and contribute to a safe, positive, and team-oriented workplace

• Participate in job rotation, training, and professional development as required

• Perform other duties necessary for the operation of the Community Services Department

Required Qualifications:

• Grade 12 education or equivalent

• Valid Class 5 New Brunswick driver’s licence and a clean driving record

• Clear criminal record check

• Direct experience preparing and maintaining arena ice

• Ability to perform repetitive and physically demanding work

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays and in adverse weather conditions

Required Certifications:

• First Aid/CPR

• WHMIS training

The following certifications or training would be considered assets:

• Arena Operator’s training (Recreation New Brunswick) or equivalent arena operations and maintenance training

• Canadian Certified Playground Inspector certification

This is a temporary unionized position covered by the CUPE Local 2163 collective agreement at $32.44/hour (2026 rates). Hours of work will vary and may include shifts longer than eight hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Compensation will be in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
