Public Art in Sussex

Known as “The Mural Capital of Atlantic Canada,” Sussex has a proud history of using public art to celebrate community, culture, heritage, and place. From the mural project launch in the early 2000s to Sussex’s participation in the Sculpture Saint John symposium in 2014, public art has allowed the story of Sussex to be told in meaningful and creative ways.

With the introduction of the Town’s Public Art Policy, Sussex is renewing its commitment to connecting with the community and transforming the spaces where we live, work, learn, and play into vibrant, inviting, and inspiring places.

The introduction of the Public Art Policy provided a guide to this development as we continue to move forward with a new vision for public art in “The Mural Capital of Atlantic Canada”.

We are fortunate and thankful for the expertise and enthusiasm of our volunteer Public Art Committee members who are crucial to the success of this effort.

Our Public Art Renewal Project

The Public Art Renewal Project builds on the success of Sussex’s original mural program while creating new opportunities to celebrate the community through contemporary public art.

As part of this renewal, several long-standing murals have been respectfully retired and replaced with new works that reflect Sussex’s evolving identity, stories, and creative spirit. These new pieces continue the tradition of public art in Sussex while inviting fresh perspectives from artists and the community.

Retired Collection

Sussex recognizes the important role its retired murals played in shaping the Town’s identity. These works helped bring local stories to life, beautified public spaces, and became familiar landmarks for residents and visitors alike.

While some murals have reached the end of their lifespan due to age, condition, or redevelopment, their impact remains part of Sussex’s public art legacy. ***COLLECTION HERE****

Art in Action

Public art helps create welcoming spaces, supports community pride, encourages conversation, and reflects the stories that make Sussex unique. It adds colour and character to everyday places while creating opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the community in meaningful ways.

Through continued investment in public art, Sussex is proud to honour its history while looking ahead to new creative opportunities.
