The Adopt-A-Hydrant program encourages volunteers to help keep fire hydrants clear, especially after a big snowstorm, in order to help firefighters quickly find and use the hydrant in an emergency. The program is open to individuals, families, businesses, and community organizations that want to ensure the safety of their neighborhoods.

WHAT IS THE ADOPT-A-HYDRANT PROGRAM?

The Town of Sussex owns, operates and maintains 324 hydrants. After a major storm it could take several days to clear the hydrants so we are asking for people to Adopt-A-Hydrant and help us by keeping it clear. There should be a 1 meter (3 foot) area around the hydrants on all sides as well as a path to the street closest to the hydrant.

Winter storms often hide fire hydrants under the snow. If the hydrants aren’t visible then firefighters have to locate and shovel out hydrants before hooking up to them, losing precious time that could have been spent saving lives and containing a fire.

When removing snow, please be aware of vehicle traffic. Do not stand in the street and be careful not to slip and fall out onto the street. Also, please do not pile the snow in the street.

The Town of Sussex is placing hydrants signs up to make the locations of the hydrants more visible. These signs have individual hydrant numbers on them to help identify the hydrant. Adopted hydrants will have the name of the individuals, families, businesses, and community organizations posted on the signs if they request it when adopting a hydrant.

To see if a hydrant needs adopted please look at the hydrant map below. Green markers mean this hydrant has been adopted. Red markers indicate hydrants still available. Click on a marker for details.
