Employment Opportunity – School Crossing Guard

The Town of Sussex has an immediate opportunity for a versatile, highly motivated School Crossing Guard. We are looking for an individual who wants to make a difference in the lives of children in our community who is available to work part-time hours throughout the week. As a front-line representative of the Town of Sussex you must be reliable, work well under pressure, able to work with minimal supervision, have the ability to multitask and be a professional who takes pride in your deportment and performance at all times. Job Responsibilities / Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist elementary school children in crossing roads safely at Sussex Elementary School crossing locations in accordance with the NB Regulation 89-101, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Town of Sussex policies,
  • Demonstrate a good sense of judgment to be able to determine timing for safe entry into the flow of traffic and be capable of crossing the roadway in a quick, orderly and safe manner,
  • Be able to stand for an extended period of time while carrying and raising a regulated STOP sign at shoulder height (weight of approx. 1 pound) for up to one minute frequently and other safety equipment,
  • Perform daily safety check of crossing location when assigned,
  • Observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to the children or guard,

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent,
  • Prior to being offered employment, candidates must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check from RCMP and Criminal Record Check,
  • Must be available for the entire school year from September until the end of June,
  • Valid New Brunswick Driver’s License-Class 5.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather climates and in high traffic areas.
  • Must be able to properly wear and use all safety equipment necessary for the duties assigned,
  • Must be able to stand and walk at a quick and steady pace for up to 1 hour at a time,
  • Must be able to hold a sign weighing up to 5 lbs, with repetitive up and down movement.
  • Must be punctual and report for duty on time and stay for the entire scheduled shift at the assigned crossing point. Monday-Friday, Hours Vary (Morning and Afternoon Shifts)

Job Type: Part-time / Casual Salary:  $16.40 per hour.
